Web reach of newspapers continues rapid growth

After a disastrous week of quarterly earnings reports from the big daily newspaper chains, there's some good news to report: the Web audience of newspaper sites is still growing at an impressive clip. Editor and Publisher reports today:

More people visited newspaper Web sites in Q2 than ever before, according to new data released from the Newspaper Association of America.

About 37% or 59 million of all active Internet users visited newspapers online in Q2, a 7.7% jump compared to the same period last year. Page views inched up during the quarter: about 2.7 billion page views per month were recorded for Q2 compared to 2.5 billion page views for the same period a year ago. The data is compiled by Nielsen//NetRatings (owned by E&P parent Nielsen Co.) on behalf of the NAA.

"As the industry continues to expand its digital portfolio, readers are visiting newspaper Web sites in record numbers for in-depth news and information as well as hyper-local information," John Sturm, president and CEO of the NAA, said in a statement.

The average monthly time spent per person also increased slightly during Q2 to 40 minutes and 44 seconds, up from 39 minutes and 29 seconds in Q2 2006.

Now all we need is for Web advertising revenue to increase fast to offset the mounting losses from print ads.
